WORKS IN THE BOROUGH
REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE.
A BUSY TIME AHEAD.
At Thursday night’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council the following report was submitted by the Works Committee and approved : — "The. staff have been engaged mostly during the past month on street improvement work, but have been hampered a good deal by the. holidays and rain.
“Formation work has been completed in the Railway Settlement, Upper Flora Street, George Street, Dearie Street, and the portion of Willoughby Street as authorised. Formation work on the continuation of King Street to Corbett Street has been partly completed. The metal has been spread on Raroa and Ainslie roads, but the rolling and blinding have been impossible on account o'f the wet weather. For the same, reason the metal has not been spread on Aorangi Road. “The reconstruction of Belmont Road between the old station site and Taylor’s. Avenue is well in hand and should be completed in about one week. This includes the rounding of the corners intersecting this street with Station Road. “The Railway Department is now completing the approach to the subway on the William Street side, and a good job is being made of the work. "The house sewerage connection authorised : for the stationmaster’s house has. been installed, and work has been commenced on the sewer extension to the Railway Settlement. “Hill Street is giving cause for much concern, but as yet it is quite impossible to commence work. We regard this as most urgent, and intend putting it in hand at the expense o'f any other job immediately weather conditions are. favourable. “Belmont Road and Normanby Road have shown considerable deterioration in the last few weeks. The work is authorised on these sections, and it will be put in hand as soon as the exigencies: of the various works will permit. It is intended to try a system of bituminous cold-mix patching in Belmont Road, and it is likely to be more satisfactory than the old method. The condition o'f Normanby Road indicates the necessity of sealing the whole main street. The centre portion has been extensively patched twice in a fe.w months, and is now as bad as> ever again, and it is obvious that something quite different is desired. “In general maintenance there has been a considerable amount, of scything o’f grass on the various footpaths.”
