Just before Christmas a wayfarer arrived in Patea hard pressed for the wherewithal to purchase a meal. He was driven to the charitable aid office, untjl he secured work from the. county engineer. After a couple of weeks’ surfacing he handed in his time, and included the Christmas and New Year holidays, during which he did not work. As is the rule with casual day labour, his time was made up without the days on which t,he shovel was not used for the benefit of the ratepayers of Patea. He drew what was due to him, left 'for Wanganui, and in due course the county engineer received t,hc following telegram, which was read, amidst laughter, at the council meeting: “King, county engineer, Patea : I think it dirty on yourpart deducting holidays, etc. You enjoyed yourself during same time. I did not see you before I left. It is not manly.”
