In recent years many of the iron telephone poles in the: Upper Clutha district were replaced by Australian grey gum saplings, arid these polqs were also used in new lines then under construction. Reports indicate that, the life of the poles thus utilised will be brief, as near the surface, in heavy soils, the timber has already decayed for Tully an inch In depth. This will mean a heavy loss, and if it is general in other districts will Bays the Cromwell paper, be a eerioiu’matter.
