DR. BARNARDO’S HOMES.

A GREAT INSTITUTION; FAMILY AS LARGEI AS A TOWN. The 'family supported, by the wellknown homes founded by the late Dr. Barnardo. is equal to 2% towns the size of Buckingham, in England. This family—the largest in the world — numbers 7725 children —boys, girls, and babies —and*s 'additional members are added to it every day. They are admitted under the charter “No Destitute Child Ever Refused Admission ” laid down by Dr. Barnardo on learning that, little “ carrots ’’ to whom he had offered the next vacancy, had been found dead in .the street from exposure and starvation. From that day, sixty years ®lgo, the charter has beeji maintained and a Welcome has been offered' to every destitute child irrespective of physical condition. There is no red tape; no voting system, and no waiting list. When Dr. Barnbi’do died at the age, of 60 he had welcomed 60,000 children ; and in this, the Diamond Jubilee year of the work, that figure has grown to 101,24'5.

An illustrated booklet has just reached us showing the work that is being done in these National Homes. The pictures show a wonderful improvement after a very short residence in the Homes in the physiqpe df these little ones, many, of whom were half starved and stunted in growth when they were received. The burden upon the Council of the Homes is >a ( heavy one, 'for they have to provide, among other things, 24,000 meals every day.

H.R.H. the Duke of York, who is the President of the Homes, in a special appeal writes : “The work of Dr. Barnardo’B( Homes is well-known and universally appreciated. It seems, therefore, hardly necessary for me to do more than remind you that it is upon the generosity o'f the public that this magnificent institution must depend if its beneficent activities are to continue uncurtailed.’’

We are asked to remind our readers that for a Christmas gfft of 10s. they can have the joy of 'feeling that they are feeding one destitute little one for 10 days. The head offices df the Homes are at 18 to 26 Stepney 'Causeway, London, E. 1., EJngl®|nd.,
