Building activities still continue to go ahead in this borough. At last night’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council seven building permits were granted to a value of £2BOO.

The Thames Borough, Council is experiencing difficulty in collecting its rates. The. rates struck in May last totalled £24,214, but up to the present only £1533 has been collected.

Two local residents appeared before Messrs W. Marshall and W. F. North, J’s.P., at the Police Court this morning charged with drunkenness in Normanby Road yesterday. On agreeing to take out prohibition orders tjiey were convicted 'and fined £2 and £l, respectively,* with 7s costs, in instance,.

At the Borough Council meeting last night Cr_. H, J. Hare drew attention to the fact that the local kerbside- petrol bowsers were not lighted at night, as required under the regulations. The Mayor said that he would have the point looked into, and intimated that the bonds required had not yet been completed.

A sale of produce, drapery, cakes, etc., will be held In the Centenary Hall on Thursday at 2.30 and 7 p.m. by the Paeroa and Nether.tpn ladies in aid df the Presbyteriajn Church. Santa Claus will be at the. Fair to distribute toys from the Christmas tree.*

Cr, J. W. Silcock has given notice of intention to move at the January meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council that steps be taken to consider ways and means of erecting public swimming baths at Paeroa.

Shortly before this morning Constable McClinchy received an urgent telephone message from a settler at Nethqrton advising that a man’s clothes, .a torch, and a bicycle were lying on the Komata side of the Waihqu River, and there ®ippear.ed t° be no sign of the owner. Anticipating a drowning accident, the constable proceeded with all haste to Komata. On arrival he gathered up the effects and was considering the prospect of making a search when he hailed by a man on the opposite bank. The man then dived into the river and swam across, and on reaching Mr McClinchy he explained that he had occasion to cross the river, and as no boat- wa-s available he had stripped off and swum across. The relieved officer thereupon handed over the effects.

The revenue received by the Paeroa Borough Council during November amounted to £985 16s Id. After paying accounts totalling £1568 Is lOd, the credit in the district fund account was £1431 18s 9d.

At the Paeroa Borough Council meeting last night Cr. J. Pinder, expressed ,the opinion that it was a pity to allo.w travelling side-shows to> camp in the domain indefinitely. The Mayor and Cr. E. Edwards explained that the side-shows had come for the Hauraki A. and P. show, .and had been granted permission to stay until the athletic sports. As a mark of appreciation of the privilege the Proprietors h'a;d run their side-shows on Thursday last and had given fifty per cent, of the gross; takings, amounting to £6 6s 9d, to the local High School Committee towards thq funds for the erection of a dental clinic.
