THAMES HOSPITAL.

MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD. ROUTINE BUSINESS. The monthly meeting oT the Thames Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held on Monday, the chairman (Mr W. E. Hale) presiding over the 'following: Messrs J. W. Danby, W. J. Hall, J. Lange, A l . R. Robinson, P. E. Brenajn, C. W. Kennedy, E. L. Walton, C. W. Parfitt, J. Rowe, and the secretary i(Mr Geo. Tonge). MATERNITY TRAINEES. The Nurses, and Midwives Registration Board, in reply £p an application from the Board for the maximum number of trainees allowed to be trained as maternity nurses to be increased at Thayne®, advised that at a meeeting o'f the association it, <h.ad been decided to ,approve of the maximum number of trainees being increased from two to three per annum. BOARD’S CONFERENCE. The secretary, Hospital Boards’ Association, advised, that, the annuaj conference o'f hospital boards, wouldbe held at Christchurch in March next. The Board was invited to forward remit for discussion. EXTERMINATION OF PESTS. Mr J. M. Malkus, known as “the cockroach king,” on account of his having entered into and been paid for a contract to rid the hospital and homes of cockroaches, wrote 'from Gisborne regretting that the contrac had not been fulfilled. He explained

that he had arranged with a. partner to complete the work, and regretted that the terms of the contract had not been complied with. The matter would be attended to on the writer’s return before Christmas.

BENEVOLENT LEAGUE', The Hauraki Ladies’ Benevolent League 'forwarded a number of certified accounts, and asking for usual donation of £lO which was granted. RESIGNATION OF SURGEON. Dr. W- J. Edginton, resident house surgeon, wrote resigning his position, and asking that he be relieved as from December 31. It was decided to receive the resignation with regret,, and that a testimonial of appreciation of servicesl be forwarded. RESIGNATION OF NURSE. Nurse M. Evans, wrote resigning her position owing to illness in her f a imily and asking to be relieved in January next. Received with regret. WAIHI HOSPITAL ACCOUNTS. The Waihi Hospital Board wrote acknowledging receipt of cheque Tor £lO7 9s in payment of patients/ fees, and also forwarding a cheque for £l2 14s in payment of fees for Waihi district patients treated at Thames Hospital. POSITION OF SISTER. On the recommendation of the chairman it was decided to advertise for the services o'f a sister at a salary of £l.lO a year.

Mr Danby wondered if the salary was sufficient to induce a good sifter twith operating theatre experience to apply.

The chairman said that it was the salary paid to a sister by larger institutions.

In the discussion that followed the chairman intimated that three O’f the board’s nurses had recently sat for an examination, and that in the event of passing ope of them might be suitable for the vacancy.

Mr Lange : Put them in whether they have pas,sed or not. To this Mr Robinson reminded the meeting that a theatre sister had arduous duties to perform, and was. required to carry great responsibilities. - It was desirable to have a sister with experience as well as qualications.

Mr Rowe said that he thought the Board s,hould be prepared to pay a higher salary to a theatre sister than to a ward sister. The chairman’s resolution Was carried, and the selection of the applicant to he left in the hands of the nurses’ committee. GENERAL. Committees for the ensuing month were set \up as follows ; —District Homes: Messrs. Robinson a|nd Kennedy ; Hospital Visiting : Messrs Rowe and Hall. / ■

ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £1322 4s 9d were passed Toij payment.

Auckland Automobile Association signboards urgipg motorists to drive slo.wly past the s.'hool have now been erected at Ngatea. Signboards giving the name of the school also have been erected.

A start has been made with the grading of the Miranda, road, but the metalled portion is still very rough.

With the enormous, increase in the amount of traffic on the Hauraki Plains main highway the surface of the road is becoming vfiry rough, and at the present rate of deterioration, will, be very unpleasant for motorists in a few weeks time.
