PROGRESS ON THE PLAINS. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Plains comity engineer, Mr F. Basham, reported to the council on Thursday asj 'follows :— NETHERTON LOAN, 1925. “The following roads been formed and graded in 'readiness, to receive- metal: Munro’s, Fisher's, School, Awaiti South, Pukahu East, and Ngarar.ahi Stop-bank. Sand has been laid on Munro’s, Fisher’s, and portion of School roads. Metalling is in progress on Munro’s, Awaiti [West, and Fisher’s; roads.” Cr,. Reid commented on the fact that carting on Wilson’s Road had been stopped, which was very satisfactory, as much damage was being done.
TURUA TOWN DISTRICT LOAN. "Metalling, blinding, and rolling On Oparaia and Raratuna streets has been completed, and the first coat of metal has beep laid on Awa Street. Hauraki Road and Or.ongo Road have been patched with bitumen and 'chips, as also has Piako Road. As §oon as the bitumen on order arrives Hauraki R)oad will be sprayed and sanded, and.Orongo Road also if funds permit.
TURUA RIDING BITUMEN ROADS.
“The Orchard East, Turua-Orongo, and Hauraki roads have been patched with bitumen -and chips, and are now ready for spraying and sanding in the early'part o'f the new year. HIKUTAIA QUARRY.
“The output for, the month was ■only 451 yards, due to a fall elf overburden on the working face o'f sjome 1500 yards. This has now been cleared away and crushing resumed. Screened metal and chips ar.e being supplied. After the demands of the Turua-Netherton loan, Hauraki Road, and the Netherton 1925 loan, SchjW, Fisher’s, Awaiti West, and Munro’s roads have been filled, which will require a further 2000 yards, I see no 'further demands; for metal supplies, unless fresh ’’wor,k is authorised.” — Referred tbi Works Committee'.
Cr. Mayn expressed the opinion that the future of the quarry should be very carefully considered. Inquiries should, be made to ascertain if there was an putside demand for metal. He moved that the Works Commit,tee report on the matter to the, next meeting. The committee, he said, should also go into the matter »f producing chips for. road maintenance. Cr. Fisher pointed out that there was nb need for anxiety until the Kerepeehi loan work was completed. “One grader outfit, is, now at Work on clay roads outside loan ,areas, and general maintenance work is being carried out as weather and funds permit.”
The chairman said that the gradqrsj would’ be sent to the hill country roads as soon as possible.
