To meet, the Christmas small change requirements, the Federal Treasury is issuing £65,000 worth of coins;, including 40',000 florins; and a proportionate, amount of other, silvei and copper coins (says a Melbourne paper). ' . This is. the usual action to cope witn the volume of coin exchange during December.
Queensland receives a large addition t.o its. minor, coinage In the shearing season ; Sydney, during the, October races; and Melbourne, during the Cup period. ' Some years ago the Treasury set out to eliminate the half-crown, but it was only partially successful. The; attempt to supplant British silver coins with Australian mintage also has been frustrated to some extent by importations by steamer passengers and others, who usually leave England with a supply, which becomes distributed when they arrive here.
