ATHLETIC SPORTS.

PAEROA CLUB’S GALA DAY.

SUCCESSFUL INITIAL MEETING

Perfect weather prevailed for the;

initial spor.ts gala and athletic meeting Of the Paeroa Athletic Club which was held at the local domain on Saturday. From every point of view the, undertaking wHis a success, and exceeded the expectations of even the most optimistic member of the club. From the first event to the last every-

■ thing went with a swing, and there was not a dull moment. Each official had his allotted task to perform, apd he did that' work ungrudgingly and thoroughly, and the result was sound co-operation and efficiency. Of the officials who toiled hajrd for the success of the meeting a special wb-rd of praise is due to the club’s secretary, Mr Ken. L. Slyfield. No matter what Mr Slyfield puts his hand to he does

it thoroughly, and Saturday’s meeting wasjzio exception. It was principally due to his splendid organisation, tact, and ability that majde the, meeting the undoubted success, that it was. A new era in athletics has

Opened in Paeroa, and it has been shown that the town can produce a. sports meeting equal to anything in the province.

The various events on Saturday drew splendid entries, and the finish-

es in many instances were; close and exciting. Considering the unusual season and the nature df the, ground the track was quite satisfactory. The cyclists appeared to find a 'few bumps, but they ”did not complain, and there 'were no ‘accidents of any kind tq mar the day’s pleasure. ' , . ■ The club’s patron, Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., was present, and had the pleasure of seeing-his silver cup won by a Paeroa School team. In presenting the cup the president, Mr W. Marshall, t,hanke.d Mr Samuel for the handsome trophy, and .congratulated the local,boys on winning it. ; The Girl Guide and Boy Scout dis-

plays were followed with considerable interest by the large gathering. In addition to dancifig the; maypole dance the Guides and Brownies performed a number <xf difficult march evolutions, and finished by forming the letters P.A.C. (Paeroa Athletic Club), which won them rounds of well deserved ,ap.plajiise. The Boy Scouts gave an exhibition of first-aid work and stretcher

drill. The way the lads treated the
