At the Paeroa Magistrate’s Court this morning Mr (El J. Clendon (Thames), on behalf of the legal profession, extended a hearty welcome to Mr F. W. Platts, S.M., on .the occasion of his. occupying the Bench at Paeroa for the first time. Excellent accounts of His Worship had been heard, and it was hoped that the 'relationship between the Bench and the Bar would, be harmonious. Mr Clendon said h.e hoped that in the future a magistrate would be appointed permanently. Messrs E. W. Porritt (Paeroa) and Jackson (Wajhi) also extended a welcome and assured the magistrate of their co-operation. In replying Mr Platts said he looked forward to spending a pleasant, .time in the district, and he also looked 'forward with pleasure to the co-operation and happy relations of’ the profession, Court officials, police, and the Press.

In replying to a toast at the Show smoke concert on Wednesday night Mr B. Myers said .that he had been agreeably . surprised at the transformation thajt had been enacted on the Hauraki Plains. Scientific drainage had done wonders, and it was: a rare sight to s,ee so many splendid farms. With such wondeitful dairying country the prosperity and progress of Paeroa and district: must be assured. • :*■■■

The. following additional inwards were .made at the Hauraki A. ajnd P. Show at Paeroa on Thursday last: Grade heifer, any' breed, in milk, H. Poland’s first, A. M. Pennell’s second, John Phillips’ third; hand-reared grade calf, any breed, calved since June, 1,1926, Sid. Abrahams’ first, Jack Silcpck’s second, J. P. Findl'biy’s third.

As a means of raising funds towards the erection df a. dental clinic at Paeroa Messjrs A. Lethaby and C. Davey, proprietors of the merry-go J round and slide, have been granted permission by the Paeroa. Domain Board to run their, novelties on Thursday next, on the occasion of the-A'isit of His Excellency the Governor-Gen-eral and Lady Fergusspn. Fifty per cent, of the grossj proceeds will be handed to the. High School Committee for the purpose mentioned. The generous action <X Messrs Lethaby and Davey is to be cqmmended, and it is - earnestly hoped that the public will back up the committee in itsl efforts to provide a clinic by supporting the places of amusement. .

A painful accident befel a little Maori boy named Jack Toto who resides with his, parents off the Te Aroha road, Paeroa, on Friday. It appears that the youngster had been playing round near his home' with some other children, when feeling tired, he went into a paddock of grass that had been shut up for hay,, and fell asleep. At the time a mowing ■machine was working at the other end of the paddock, and not knowing the lad was lying asleep, ajul failing to notice him- in the long grass, the driver ran the mowing machine intohim. The lad sustained a very deep cut on his right knee. He was at once taken to the Arohanui private hospital for surgical attention.

An exhibitor at the Hpiuraki Show expressed his opinion that it was one of the best managed shows: he had ever exhibited a.t. He said that nothing was too much trouble for the officials to ensure the comfort and convenience df exhibitors. “The friendliness and hospitality met with is unbounded,” he concluded.

The annual matriculation examinations, held under the auspices ol? the University of New' Zealand, commenced on Wednesday last, and will be continued until Friday next. At Paeroa seven pupils 'a;re sitting for the full examination and three are taking portions for a completed pass.

The value of scouting was mentioned by Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., when he presented the winning team with the trophy it had won at the show on Thursday las,t. Scouting made boys better boys, he s' a iid, and good scouts became good men and good citizens. The people of Paeroa should be proud of the local troop of boy scouts, and the district commissioner, Mr E. W. Porritt, and the scoutmaster, Mr T. D. Davies were to be congratulated. The team —Masters G. Southby, R. Campbell, H. Verran, and H. Blyth, with Master N. Robinson as patient—was n.warded .the highest number of points and the right to hold “The W. W. Scott” Cup for. twelve months. The judge, commented on the efficiency of the display and the difficulty of selecting the best team. There was vej-y little difference in the points of the four teams.
