The Methodist Church was first planted in New Zealand in 1822, but was uprooted, and then, formally replanted in 1827, when the mission was re-established at Hokianga. The Home Missions Board is taking steps to commemorate the centenary of that ©lent A monument is to be erected at Majngunga, Hokianga, and, immediately after the 1927 conference rises, a pilgrimage will prdbably be made by many of the members, and friends to that historic spot for the unveiling ceremony and Maori- demonstrations. A large number of power poles for the Waitqkauri-Maratoto transmission line have arrived at Waikinp, and a start will be made .to deliver these along the line K as; soon as the necessary repairs; to a bridge, damaged by flood some time ago, are completed. The line will pass through two or three miles of native bush from Golden Cross to Maratoto, necessitating a considerable amount of clearing. Whether life beyond the grave is happier than it is her® ,and whether thfi nature of that life depends upon the nature of the life we live here—these are questions that Sir Oliver Lodge says he cannot answer, s,ays a Sydney paper. But, whatever our individual views on these things may be, there is only one .way in which to get the best out of Our lives on this earth —and it is a wpy which will add to our hope of a reward hereafter —and that is, as Stevenson puts it, to “do the best, and say the best, and be the best.” Following out that rule of conduct, we may leave the scientists and theologians to fight ou,t their differences, in the sure and certain hope that, whatever may be the meaning df man’s presence on earth, and whatever may happen after death, ,when the time comes for us to lay down the burden we shall have done all that is humanly possible.
