THE COCKY AND HIS COW
Under the heading of “Passing Notes.” a contributor to the Ngaruawahia Advocate writes :— The Townsfolk burble in their pride, And Superiority avow. One fact remains predominant, As they must e’en allow ; The country’s credit rests, upon The Cocky and his Cow. They look down on the Country Bloke, As if he were a -Chow; They joke about his ways and clothes, They class him plain low brow. But who supplies their food and clothes ? The Cockey and his Cow.
Skyscrapers on a city street Are all the rage just now ; To build them money just pours in— Enough ,to fill a scow, Causing envious wonderment To Cocky and his Cow.
A Civic Centre Auckland wants,, And a harbour bridge, I vow. She has a. wharf for submarines, And other freaks enow. Who has to ‘foot the blinking bill ? The Cocky and his Cow.
If Cocky wants a quid or two, Some further land to plough, Money’s tight and interest high— His stubborn back must bow; The “loanly” read’s a heavy one For Cocky and his Cow.
These things are true;- all honest folk Their verity allow. What must I do to help myself To better things just now 1 Remove myself to a different class From Cocky and his Cow.
