PLAINS DRAINAGE.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Apparently with amalgamation in view more local interest is being taken in drainage matters. “Gunner” and “Possum’’- have, 1 think, struck the right chord, but have missed one vital point. That is, that a candidate’s views and vow's should be made ,to a public meeting of ratepayers. It has not been unknown for an aspirant to suffer a complete lapse of memory when his seat lias become a fact. I think, also, a candidate should be able to produce a certificate of integrity, to wit, jiast public actions; also that his visiofo extends beyond his own corner pegs. We should, too, be aware of the danger of entrusting our public affairs to “half-pie” farmers who have to supplement their living by joining the ranks of the valiant, popular, and ever-increasing order, namely, “The man who milks the man who milks the cow,” there being a tendency to make the milking process and public (?) service go hand in hand. As the principle of life is parasitic, these men, it must be admitted, have attained the perfected -degree. This Genii Homo claims shduld not be encouraged. Unquestionably.our drainage board should consist of Icapable men who obviate the necessity of grdups of ratepayers being forced to (form a source of annoyance at the monthly meetings of the said board. ENOS.
