' A writ fyas been issued Out of the Supreme Court, Wellington, against Godfrey Williams, a Welsh mine-own-er, who recently returned to New Zealand aboard the yacht Surprise .after a cruise in Australian waters. Application for the writ was made by Messrs Dolan and. Rogers, acting on behaW of Anthony H. D. Mayne, solicitor, of Napier. •-•Mayne left New Zealand on board the'-Surprise some months ago in the capacity, it is understood, of secretary to Williams, but left the yacht soon after arrival in Sydney. He ndw claims £1245, alleging that Williams, broke the contract. “Possession of large tracts <Xf valuable land does not necessarily mean that a man is wealthy in New Zealand remarked His Honour, Mr Justice Ostler, when addressing the jury in the Napier Supreme Court on Saturday. “A man may be quite wealthy on paper and yet be perilously close to the bankruptcy court under our present system,” he continued. Anti-tobaecoites are wont to say hard things about smoking, but quite often they are untrue. Tobacco may have its 'faulte, but its virtues should not be overlooked. Smoking assists digestion : it is also a great preserva - tive of the teeth and a destroyer of the harmful germs which infect all people’s mouths, while its soothing and tranquilistog effects in times of mental stress, -worry, or exertions are well known to all smokers. But th-?, quality should be good. Brands full of nicotine, (like many of the imported varieties) are best avoided, our own New Zealand-grown tobaccos contain comparatively little nicotine, au l may consequently be, smoked freelv without injurious results, wnile owing to the leaf being toasted In the process of manufacture (quite a novel idea) they are remarkable for flavous and fragrance. The popular brands are Riverhead Gold, aromatic ; Navy Cut (Bulldog), medium; and Cut Piug No. 10 (Bullshead), lull strength. The demand for these goods is "growing so rapidly that toe New Zealand tobacco industry is assuredly destined to become of th; first importance*
