HAURAKI COUNTY WORKS
ENGINEER’S REPOBT. The Hauraki Plains county Engineer, Mr F. Basham, reported to the council meeting on Thursday last asfollows: — “During the month all work has been held up by wet weajther. “Turua-Netherton Loan.—The bottom course of metal has. been blinded and rolled. Claims for subsidy have been sent in to the Public Works Department” In reply to Cr, Madgwick the engineer said that there was noi sign of the subsidy yet.
"Netheiton Loan, 1925.—An endeavour to start metalling on Slchool and Munro’s roads has been made, but rain has interrupted. One or two fine days will enable a fresh -start to be made. Should weather rlemain fine, work will be commenced on other roads.” Cr. Reid mentioned .that there was no drain on the northern side of School Road, and this was necessary. A couple of pipe culverts might be satisfactory.
The engineer was instructed tp report on the, matter. “Maukoro Landing Road. —In company with Cr. Mayn I inspected the damage being done to the road and adjoining property by the scouit in the drain. This is due to the removal of gravel from the lower end of the drain. Unless some steps are taken to prevent further scour very serious damage is. bound to occur in .the near future. I have written to the engineer of the Piako County Asking him to name a date to' meet us there. So far 1 have received no reply.” Cr. Mayn advocated installing three dams .to prevent the scour. One of the settlers had offered £2O towards the cost. ’
The engineer said that the stream was in the Piako County, and it was necessary to come to an agreement. The engineer was instructed to expedite the matter. “Waikumete Stream Bridge,—Some two and a half years ago a wing was added to the abutment of this bridge, on the WaitakaTurui-Morrinsville road, to prevent the bank being scoured away and the stream cutting behind the abutment. During recent heavy floods scour has occurred beneath the foundation of this wing, and it is showing signs of collapse. There was too. much water in the stijeam when I was there to allow of close inspection being made, A fuller report will be submitted wheji water is low. Considerable expenditure will inevitably have to be made. “Hikutaia Quarry.—A break through to the eastern side of the hill has been made. As sodn as the pit is cleaned up and the stripping removed from the floor quarrying will be carried on along the eastern face of the quarry, where the quarry should have been opened up in the first place. I am replacing the screen and reject
conveyor, and will be supplying screened metal until the demand 1 for chips is satisfied.” Th'e report was adopted.
