BOWLING.

'GOLDFIELDS STARS MATCH. -PAEROA DEFEATS WAIKINO. The second game this season for the Goldfields Stars was played at Paeroa, on Saturday afternoon, the holders (Paeroa) defeating the challengers (Waikino) by 16 points on 19 heads. Showery weather was experienced during the afternoon, and the heavy rain which fell during the morning made the green a trifle on the heavy side. Following were the teams :■—

Paeroa : W. McCullay, W. T. Power, W. Hamilton, W. Purdie (skip).

Waikjno: Franklin, Pivac, Hinds, Johnson (skip). The local team compiled five; points in the first three heads, but on the fourth head Waikino .turned the tables by putting d<hvn a good five for the head, equalising the scorers. The'following eight heads resulted in Paeroa scoring 17 points, including a five on .the 11th head, to the visitors’ 2 points. On the 19th head the scores were, Paeroa, 30 Waikino 14. Realising the hopelessness df beating the holders, it was decided not to play the full 21 heads and .the game was concluded.

At the finish of the match the president of the Goldfields Association (Mr Clothier, Te Aroha) extended hearty congratulations to Mr Purdie and his team on not only defeating the Waikino team that afternoon, but also on the splendid performance in the Labour Day tournament, when the team went right through without a loss. Mr Clothier intimated tha in future including the game that afternoon, the holders of the Goldfields Stars would receive a suitable button to commemorate the occasion. He was soinry that he had been unable to see the final game for the Clothier Shield and Stabs on Labour Day. The result appeared to be a foregone conclusion by the way Mr Purdie’s team was playing, but he had not Mr Purdie’s address so that he could telegraph congratulations. Mr Purdie returned thanks on behalf of his team for the eulogistic remarks passed, and called on the holders to give three, cheers for the challengers. Cheers for Mr Clothier and the Waikino team concluded a. most enjoyable and interesting afternoon’s bowling.

The Paeroa team has accepted a challenge from a Te Aroha team for the Stars, and the game is to be played at Paeroa on November 27.
