DANCE HALL COSTS.

ONE THOUSAND POUNDS A WEEK. PROFITS AND RISKS. An idea of the large sums/ involved in the maintenance of dapce halls was given to a London reporter by the manager of a big dance hall in the West End, who sajd :— “My maintenance costs are about £lOOO a week, the principal item being £5OO for rent. My other expenses are : Bands, £2OO ; staff, £l5O ; advertising, £lOO ; lighting, £5O. “As we only, charge 2s 6d for admission, except on Saturday night,, we must have 8000 visitors a week at least to cover our expenses. Our worst enemy is 'fog. Rain is bad for the attehdajnce if there has been a downpour all day, but if it rains about 7 or 7.30 in the. evening it otfen causes a number of people to) come to the hall who otherwise might have spent the evening out of doors.” Considerable profits, had made out of some of the large popular dance halls, which seem to present less financial risk than the smaller a : nd more expensive ballrooms.

The owner of a large suburban dance hall gave his weekly budget as follow's : Two bands, £lOO ; staff, £5O , rent, £25 ; lighting, £2O ; advertising, £2O.
