GENERAL NEWS.
The Wellington civic clean-up has been, completed (says the Evening Post), the total amount of refuse collected being between 3000 and 4000 cubic yards. It was etimated that the wor;k would occupy thirteen days, but .actually, so great was the volume of refuse put out, the collection took seventeen days of hard going. The money collected, it is understood, is not nearly sufficient to cover the cost, but is sufficient, together with the council’s grant, to 1 bring out quite a satisfactory balance-sheet. In past yeals the clean-up has cost the city approximately £lOOO, but this year’s figure, notwithstanding the greater, amount collected and the necessarily slower working on account of the house-toi-house inspection, is considerably under the £looo' mark.
Howling is usually regarded as one of the few popular pastimes in which cash are not given for tournament on club championship successes, but Mr R. Henderson, president Of the Te Awamutu .Bowling Club, recently sholwed the Waipa Post a poster just received from England, setting out details, of a monster tourney held under the control of the British Crown Green Amateur Bowling Association, which operates in north and central England. The prizes offered total £loo'o in cash. The winner’s portion is £lOO, a gold medal, and a silver replica of the Gold Challenge Cup (which latter trophy he will hold for a year). It is further announced that the “Sporting-Chronicle;” will pay the railway fares of the 128 finalists to the ground selected for the final games.
