The deputy-registrar (Mr P. Jaspers,) advises the following vital statistics for Paeroa for the month df October : Births', 7 ; deaths, 2 ; marriages, 0.

A large number of Paeroa and idstrict turf patrons journeyed, to Thames for the purpose of attending the- annual race meeting at ParawaJ racecourse on Saturday, apd again , to-day. The specialh trains were well patronised from Paeroa, and dozens of people travelled by motor-bus and car.

A long walk was undertaken by a swagger last week. He had siaitcd biom Waihi at 1 a.m., inquired at Paeroa for work, and reached Morrinsviile by about 4.30 p.m., a total dis>tance of about 40 miles.

After receiving advice, that he had won £5OOO in an Australian sweepstake a New Zealander recently travelled across the Tasman in a steerage berth to collect. On Tuesday he returned to- Wellington in a. steerage berth on the Makura from Melbourne —presumably with the prize money in his possession. Whether it was thrift, a ntural caution or a national trait which prompted his voluntary confinement to steerage is not explained.

The October meeting Of the EJstow Drainage BoSrd was held on Thursday. The Lands Department invited the board to send a representative; to a conference .at Paeroa respecting drainage works in the Nethe.rtpn area. Mr Wynyard stated that the proposed conference would be a special one to deal with Awa,iti problems. The engineer, Mr Johnson, submitted a classification list for the 9waiti area which was adopted.

The annual self-deniaj campaign conducted by the Salvation Army throughout New Zealand closed last week. Provincial results in round figures a;re as follows 1 : Auckland Province, £10,392 ; Canterbury and Westland, £7382 ; .Otago and Southland, £7780 ; Marlborough, Nelson, and portion of Wellington Province, south of Levin and Pahiatua, £6279 ; Hawke’s Bay, Poverty Bay, Taranaki, Manawatu, and King Country, £10,286. The Paeroa amount is l £132, Thames £375, and Te Aroha £393. The Dominical total is £42,119.

The Hauraki Drainage Board held a special meeting of a s;hort duration on Friday last 'folr the purpose of •making and levying the general rates as advertised and for the passing of some few accounts. It was suggested that in future the Board meet on the first Friday of the month instead of the last Friday, so that wages and other payments could be, made for the calendar month preceding without delay.

A Bond Street (Lcxndon) sjiop is selling aeroplanes in the ‘same, way as others sell motor-cars (says a London correspondent). The, favourite type is a Havilland Moth, capable of being dismantled and packed into a, motdr-car for transport to a suitable spot for taking off.

It is pleasing to record the successes gajiied by local horses at the Thames Jockey Club’s meeting at Parawai on Saturday. Mr P. E. Brenan’s Miss Egypt, trained by N. JPrenter, annexed first honours in the Hauraki Plains Handicap, 7 furlongs. Messrs W. K. Morrison and S. Smith, owners of Atapai, trained by L. D. Rice a,t Paeroa, gained first place, in the second division of the Trial Handicap, 5 furlongs'. In the Flying Handicap, 6 furlongs, Mr W. M. Sorensen’s Eh Timi, trained by J. W. Cathrd, ran into ’fourth place.
