PAEROA HIGH SCHOOL.
' MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Paeroa District High School Committee was held on Friday night, the chairman. (Mr C. H. Pascoe) presiding over Messi’s RJ. Thorp, J. H. McDonald, W. T. Power, W. Smith, G. H. Taylor (headmaster), and W- L. Lawrence (secretary). RESIGNATION OF MEMBER. Owing to being transferred, Mr W. H. Blakeway Wrote tendering his resignation a.s a member of the committee. The resignation was accepted with regret. FIRE EXTINGUISHERS. In reply to an application for a supply of chemical fire extinguishers to be placed in the corridors of the school, the Auckland Education Board advised that its supply was at present exhausted. The department had beep communicated with and asked if it could supply a futrher number, and on receipt of a reply the committee would be advised. INSPECTORS’ REPORT. The board’s inspectors forwarded a report on the secondary department for .the period September 20 and 22. The; report stated, inter alia, that the work w(ag being carried on effectively and the standard of efficiency Was, distinctly good. The accommodation was suitable, and the well-equipped science room had: proved a valuable adjunct for the effective carrying out of the HiraJ course in science. The report : was received, and it was. deteided to record appreciation of the. efforts of Miss' H. Taylor and Mr E. G. Preston. SCHOOL SAVINGS BANK. The headmaster reported op the progresß made in connection with the establishment of the school S|avfiigs bank. He stated that since the beginning of October 112 children had opened accounts at the school, and the total’ savings to date amounted to £34 6s 6d. In his 1 opinion, although considerable extra work had been placed on the teachers, the movement was a splejidid one and worthy of encouragement. . Several members expressed pleasure at the result, and accorded Mr Taylor hea,rty thanks for the time, and interest he was giving to the encouragement of thrift. TEACHERS’ EXAMINATIONS. The headmaster reported on the recent success of several pupils at the; high school in the teachers’ examinations held in August. He stated that Miss M. Hutchins, although still a pupil at the school, had obtained her D pass and was now qualified to take up any position. The ; pass was a creditable one, especially when it was considered that it took some teachers eight or nine years to paS,s. Another pupil had obtained a partial pass, which meant that out of .18 subjects probably she had miss'ed in only two. Four out of six of the pupils, had obtained some definite pass. On the motion of Mr McDonald it wajs resolved that a letter of congratulation be forwarded to Mr E. G. Preston, who had coached the pupils for the examination. GROUND IMPROVEMENTS. Mr Smith reported at length on the work carried out to the new playing area. The matter of ploughing in the green oats, and levelling of the area was referred to a special sub-commit-tee, with power to act. Mr McDonald reported that 22 yards of spawls had been obtained for the clay bank in the boys’ playground, and the matter of erecting a retaining wall was left in the hands of Messrs McDonald and Smith, with pO|wer to act. SCHOOL GAMES. The chairman asked the headmaste.r to accept the committee’s congratulations on the success the school basketball teams had won, and also the football team, during the season.
