BOWLING.

CLOTHIER SHIELD TOURNAMENT. TWO DAYS’ PLAY AT PAEROA. There will be a large influx of bowlers to Paeroa during this week-end* The annual Clothier Challenge Shield and Goldfields Stars tournament commences at 9 o’clock to-morrow morning and will be continued on Monday (Labour Day). This tournament, which is held alternately at Paeroa and Te Aioha, never fails to draw considerable interest. This year the following clubs have entered two full rinks : Waikino, Matamata, Hikutaia, Thames, Te Aroha, MOrrinsville; Paeroa,, and Waihi. The Waikino Club at present holds the shield, which is competed for annually, and the winners retain the trophy for the year. The Goldfields Stars, are challenged for throughout the se;ason by any club, the challengers being required! to play for them on the rinks' of the holders. After the stalls have, been won by a team at .the beginning of each season a rota is drawn up and the challenges received in that order. The stars are held by Paeroa, Matamata losing them to the local team after a close, game last Reason. The holders also withstood challenges from Te Aroha and Waikino. During the whole of last season the stars changed hands only four times. The Paeroa riinks for the tournament will be : Stars team, W. McCullay, W. T. Power, W. Hamilton; W. Purdie (skip) ; and the No. 2 teajm, W. Chamberlain, G. H. Taylor, W. J, Towe.rs, F. Marsh (skip). In all there will be 64 players taking part in the two days’ tournament, and as each club is sending its two strongest teams some really good bowling should be witnq=sed. The secretary (Mr W. Purdie) reports that the gre.en has responded well , to the attention given it during the week, and, given fine weather, a successful tournament is' confidently expected.
