WAIHI BEACH ROAD.
SUNDAY TRIPPERS IN TROUBLE.
MANY CARS HELD UP. The need for attention to the Walhi Beach road was strikingly demonstrated on Sunday (States the Waihi Telegraph), when, taking advantage of .the favourable weather conditions in the forenoon, a large number of people—mainly by motor-air —proceeded out to' the seaside resort, many evidently to see the large sperm whale that has been cast up on the beach at the Bowentown end during last week.
The journey out by car was accomplished without mishap as the, road, after a couple of fine sunny days, was in fair order, but during the afternoon a heavy downpour of rain came on and the return trip was by no means enjoyable. One. of the first cars to leave experienced trouble by getting bogged, in the mud, and the mishap resulted in a Ion?; line of (at one time) no less that twenty-six cars being held up. Thence, on ca.r after car suffered the same fate, and the road was soon well churned up. People who took the precaution of carrying chains with them got through fairly ea,sily, but they were in a minority. One large car got into a rut and the assistance of a nearby farmer had to be invoked, but two horses failed to move the car, it eventually having to be got out at a late hour with the assistance of another car.
Many humorous, interludes occurred. A couple of small cars with racing bodies* were picked up holus bolus and carried out of the ruts by tne occupants. Numerous small buys who had cycled out enjoyed the predicaments the motorists found themselves in.
