TROUT FISHING.
SPORT HAMPERED BY WEATHER
CONSIGNMENT OF FRY RECEIVED.
Weather conditions since the fishing season opened have been very unnfavourable. locally Few week-ends have been fine enough to permit of enthusiasts travelling far, and, again, the various streams have be.en in swollen state owing to the heavy rain for some .time past. During the last week-end conditions were a little more favourable, and some of the more enterprising anglers were able to account for a few fish. Messrs Mead and J. Bunting, of Karangahake, fished the upper reaches of the Waitawheta, Stream and caught four trout totalling 101 b in weight. Fishing in the Komata Stream, Mr W. Halligan landed a fine, trout which tipped the scales at 3%1b, while Mr r~D. Leach caught one weighing l%lb. In. each instance the, fish were in splendid condition and afforded good sport. TROUT FRY. Five cans of trout fry were received by the 'Ohinemuri Acclimatisation Society during fast week from the Rotorua hatcheries. The fry, numbering 15,000, were brought to Paeroa in excellent condition by Mr M. Yerex, chief ranger, and were, sent on to " Owharpa by rail, thence ca,rted to the stream above the falls. The 'following day .they w e re taken up-stream by the tramway tracks and liberated by Mr C. Mead in?the Waitawheta Stream. It is pleasing to report that there was not .a dead fry when liberated from the cans. Owing to the extra quantities of fry required for the Arapuni dam, the Tairua River, and other places, the quotas for all the societies have been reduced. The local society intends to further stock the Komata and Hikutaia streams should it receive an additptional consignment later on. The Tairua River, which lies on the ea&t coast about due east of Thames, is difficult of access. Mr Yere,x proposes to the fry to -'Waihi by rail, thence they will be carted to either Bowentown dr Whangamata, where the fry will be picked up by launch and conveyed to. Tairua. This stream hast newer been stocked, and the experiment will be watched with interest by local anglers, especially in view of the fact tha,t a motor road will be available from Thames in the near future.
