It is understood that on Saturday evening Constable McClinchy made a raid on the Maori settlement at Tirohia, where a quantity of liquor was seized. The affair is likely to have its sequel at the November sitting of the Police Court at Paeroa.
A summary of general receipts and payments for the half-year presented at the Hauraki Plains County Council meeting on Thursday showed receipts totalling £3774 19s 8d and payments totalling £6160 14s* 7d. Included in the expenditure was £1385 5s 6d for the construction of the Pipiroa ferry, £lOB3 14s 7d on plant maintenance, and £lOOO on account of the No. 1 machinery loan.
Following the heavy rain and thunderstorm on Thursday night the weather cleared on Friday, and Saturday was a beautiful day. The weather locally yesterday w.as. again unfavourable. In the morning the sky was overcast, and the atmosphere was heavy and muggy. During the afternoon torrential rain fell, and it continued until late in the evening.
A link with the early days of Turua passed away last week when the old Victoria Hall was demolished. This was the, first public hall in the district, and was opened on the date* of the diamond jubilee of the late Queen Victoria, twenty-nine years ago. Much of the timber is still sound, and it is being used by the; owners, Messrs Bagnall Bros., and Co., Ltd., in the extensive additions to their general store.
The following sums have been spent in the various ridings of the PlainsCounty during the past six months out of the genera.l account: Kopuarahi, £938 ; Turua, £l4l ; Horahia, £1904 ; Kerepeehi, £384 ; Netherton, £224 ; Patetonga, £162 ; Ngatea, £1309; Pipiroa. £1527 ; Waitakaruru. £6OO.
Mr W. H. Taylor, who met with a* se,rious accident at the Paeroa Racecourse on August 31, was- the recipient of congratulations and a hearty welcome from the president and members of the local bowling club on Saturday afternoon.
The flood in the Piako River reached its highest mark on Thursday last, when the record of the 1924 flood was exceeded. Thq water was inside the wharfshed at Kaihere Landing on that day, but it is now receding. At Kerepeehi there has only been about an inch of tidal action for several days, the flood being well above spring tide level. The steamer Hauiti was able to proceed to Kaihere Landing on Friday last without danger of being caught by the tide.
The proposal to form a, cricket club in Turua has been abandoned on account -of the difficulty of securing a suitable playing field. Field drains are now being laid in the domain, and it will probably be well into the season before the ground will be in a fit state for matches. The cricket enthusiasts of Turua; will join the Kopuarahi club.
The statement of the general rata account ter the half-year ending September 30, which was presented at last Thursday’s meeting of the Ha.uraki Plains County Council, shows that of th© £11,894 outstanding at the beginning of the financial year and of the £11,746 of current rates, £4890 of arrears and £96 of current rates had been collected.
