LICENSE TO SELL MEAT.

MR. J. BEBTELSWS APPLICATION.

MATTER AGAIN BEFORE COUNCIL.

At the July meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council an ’ application for a license to retail meat was received from Mr J. Bertelsen. A report was received from the Health Inspector at tha.t meeting advising that the premises, situated in Queen Street, were unsuitable .as a shop, and that considerable alterations and renovations would be necessary to 1 bring them up to the standard required by the Act.

At the Borough Council meeting on Thursday evening last several letters were received from Mr Bertelsen in connection with his ,application. He stated that although the Inspector of Health had visited the premises and had not recommended the granting of a license while the building was in its present state, he had failed to indicate clearly what was required under the Act.

The Mayor said that acting on th®, advice of .the Health Inspector, Bertelsen had obtained .a copy of the department’s regulations, which were explicit. The building the applicant intended to use as a butcher’s shop could never conform to the requirements of the Act without drastic alterations. It was reasonable, to expect Mr Bertelsen to submit a plan a,nd specifications of the alterations he was. prepared to make. Ct. Pinder said that it appeared unnecessary to instal a hot water service.

The Mayor explained that there were two sets, of regulations. Alterations to existing buildings were, different in the regulations pertaining to the granting of a license to new premises. The council was in duty bound to support the Health Inspector so long as. his demands> were fair and reasonable.

Cr. Brenan moved that the applicant be informed that as soon .as the requirements Of .the Act had been complied with the council would be prepared to consider the granting of a license. The motion was carried.
