BOWLING.

SEASON COMMENCES AT PAEROA. FORMAL OPENING OF CLUB. The twenty-second season of the Paeroa Bowling Club commenced in ideal weather on Saturday afternoon. It has been the custom for many years to hold an official opening each season and to invite members of adjacent clubs to take part in the ceremony. Owing to the continuous wet weather tha,t has prevailed during this month, and also the fact that .the Goldfields Stars and Clothier Shield competitions are to be played on the local gre.en on Saturday next, it was deemed advisable to dispense with the official opening this season so as to enable local players to obtain a. good afternoon's practice, and also to con-

serve the green. Promptly at 2.30 p.m. the president (Mr P. Williams) called the members together and explained the reasons for departing from the customary opening. He warmly welcomed the members, and said that the graciousness of the clerk of the .weather in allowing such a bright sunshiny afternoon for the event augured well for the club’s happiness and success during the 1926-27 season. In welcoming the new members the president said that he hoped they would soon become conversant with the game and derive a great deal of pleasure from it. A special appeal was made to members tha.t if they had any grievances or disagreements not .to harbour them among themselves, but to place them before the officials of the. club, when every endeavour would be made to promote harmony and goodfellowship. In declaring the green open the president expressed the hope that a happy and profitable season Would be enjoyed. The members were then divided into five rinks, and at the conclusion of the afternoon's play it was found that the president’s, team had been defeated by the vice-president’s team by four points. Following are the details, the president’s rinks being mentioned first in each instance :—■ Preston, Vowles, Wilkinson, Morland (skip), 22 v. v. W. Smith, C. Holes, Forrest, W. Chamberlain (skip) 12 ; Ellis, Alexander, de Castro, W. H. Taylor (skip), 16 v. Waiting, Pinder, Hamilton, Edwards (skip) 21; Brocket Steedman, Power, P. Williiams (skip), 16, v. Lowry, Bassett, F. Marsh; T. L. Williams (skip) 24 ; Olsen, J. McDonald, McCullay, L. Gibb (skip) 18, v. Hale, Barclay, G. H. Taylor, C. Mettam (skip) 16; McCrory, Mclntyre, Cane (skip) 19, v. Fathers, Thorp, Purdie (skip) 22. Totals: 91 to 95. The green was; found to be rather soft and on the heavy side for play, but considering the unseasonable weather that has been experienced, credit is due to the green superintendent for the progress; ma.de under such adverse conditions.
