TURUA TOWN BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING.

Tlie first meeting of the new members of the Turua Town Bo’ard was held on Wednesday evening, those I?re,sent being: Messrs J. Mules, C. Scott, J. H. Johnston, J. Schmidt, J. McConnell, J. T. Davies, S. G. Williams, and J. E. Green (clerk). ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. The first business was the appointment of a chairman, and the clerk took the chair and called for nominatiohs. Mr J. Mules was nominated by Messrs McConnell and Williams, and as there was no othej- nomination the retiring chairman was re-elected. COMMITTEES APPOINTED. The following committees were appointed for the year: Works, -Messrs Mules (chairman) McConnell, Williams, and Schmidt; Finance. Messrs Mules (chairman) Davies, Scott, and Johnston. A welcome to Mr Schmidt was extended by the chairmam tOn the motion of the chairman it was decided to record a vote of appreciation of the services rendered by Mr F. Olsen, who had declined to seek reelection. WAR MEMORIAL. The chairman reported that so far nothing had been done in the matter Of renovating the war memorial board. Mr SccVtt reported that he had £l2 3s in hand for that purpose. The chajrman reported that permission had been obtained to place the board in the new hall. A lengthy lis-t of names of who had enlisted from Turua was scrutinised and amended, and the matter was held over for further consideration. MAINTENANCE OF ROADS. The clerk reported that the bitumen for patching the sealed roads had arrived ’a,bout a month ago. It was decided to have the small portable bitumen heater brought to Turua for use as soon as possible. Mr Williams- advocated having the whole of the sealed road recoated with bitumen. This was supported by Mr Schmidt, who pointed out that pa.rt of Piako Rofad was crumbling up rapidly. It w.as agreed to test .the material in hand before ordering more. The works committee was also instructed to endeavour to borrow 1 a grader for use in the botod’s area. OFFER OF METAII The Thames Quarries, Ltd., submitted an offer to supply broken metal at 9s per yard and chips at 12s per yard on the scow at Tararu. The chairman said that metal would be required for the completion, of the township roading schem' e . The clerk stated that it was necessary to place the order promptly, as there was a chance of the quarry .closing down unless an order was forthcoming from the Lands Drainage Department this summer. It was- suggested that an inspection of the quarry should be made to ascertain the suitability of the metal.
