MEDICAL CONGRESS.

FIXED FOlt NEXT TBAr.

IMPORTANT DUNEDIN GATHERING

Highly important questions will come up for review at the triennial Australasian Medical Congress, which, after a lapse of about twelve years, will be held in New Zealand (at Dunedin) in February next. The Government has, demonstrated its interest in the matter by voting £looo* towards the cost of printing the transactions of the conference and by offering transport concessions to the delegates. The forthcoming Congress is the second that has been held under the auspices of the British Medical Association, the first session having been held at Melbourne in 1923, on which occasion delegates fr«m the Dominion were present. Prior ,to that the Congress was a separate organisation, and had twice met in New Zealand — once at Dunedin, in 1896, and next at Auckland, in 1914. It is expected that among the subjects to be discussed by Congress will be infantile paralysis tuberculosis, cancer, maternal mortality, wdrk on the hook-worm disease ia,nd malaria in Samoa, and an entirely new aspect of endemic goitre and its prevention. It is anticipated also that experiments on the effect of preservatives oh the vitamine content of foods will be completed and presented, the authorities concerned realising th e important bearing the lsiubj®ct has on the butter industry.

In addition to its grants towards the cost of printing ,the transactions of Congress, Cabinet has approved of overseas delegates and their wives being allowed to travel first-class on railway journeys at the second-class rate of fares. If delegates, who come within the category of distinguished guests are present the customary courtesies will no doubt be extended.

It is understood that a movement is in 1 progress to secure a visit to Congress of Sir George Buchanan, who holds the position of "second in command” to the British Ministry Of Health.

A number of officers from the Health Department will be present at the conference.
