One of .the Lands Drainage Department’s big American steam dipper dredges was brought down the river from the. Waitoa district last week to a spot a little above the Kaihere landing. When certain repairs .have been effected it will be employed in constructing a canal and stop-bank from the Piako River to the Awaiti dis'rict The on the southern side of the proposed cut will become the northern boundary ot the ponding area, and will eventually be opened up (for- settlement. The present canal from the Kaihere landing to the Awaiti canal will eventually become a sump, from which the drainage of the two bldcks will be pumped to the Awaiit canal.
