METAPHYSICAL HEALING.
AN INTERVIEW WITH MR. CALVI-FREEMAN.
From time to time, both in the lay .and the;. medical Press., reference will have been noticed of the great strides being made of late in the treatment of disease. More and more the importance of the mental factor has been recognised, and the unconscious activities of the mind in cases of bodily disease are now being closely investigated by leaders of scientific thought.
None the less, the methods of the orthodox practitioner aJ’e prone to conservatism, and such subjects, as psycho-analysis and metaphysical healing are not included in the curriculum of medical study. In this connection it is. well to remember that such a vital discovery as the curculation of the blood was made by Harvey himself not a physician, and it was in the face of the greatest opposition from the medical profession that this truth was established. Knowing that Mr Calvi-Freeman was the leading metaphysical practitioner in New Zealand, his C.alvi-Fl®e-man Institute in Auckland having won fame alhover Australasia, a Press representative discussed with him the 'rationale of his treatment.
On apprising Mr Calvi-Freeman of his mission, that gentleman showed no hesitancy in explaining his treatment. Yet he was at pains to make clear that his methods are hard to make understandable to persons who have not' investigated his powers. Most patients, when told that "the mind controls the body,” seem to think that the treatment is a form of hypnotism. This is a control of one mind by another. “My treatment, however, is wholly different. Briefly, its principle is this : Every created thing, man, plant, and animal has a given amount of vital force. The strong, hdalthy man or woman has more of the fo'rce than those invalided in any way—that is the difference between sicknes and health. This, vital force Is able to be absorbed by jhe individual frpm..the great reservoir all about us. Indian occultists know this, and their seemingly miraculous feats are due to the knowledge they possess for utilising this vital force. My methods are esoteric to an extent, but the great value of my treatment lies in my ability to transfer my vital force to the nervous systems of my patients. This at once tohes up the whole organism. A splendid peace and content takes the place of the fretifulness peculiar to the sickly—and patients feel passing from my hands what they, commonly describe as an electrical thrill that vibrates down the spine and along all the nerve conduits of the body.” “You do not use electricity or anything of that kind, I suppose ?” Queried the reporter.
“Decidedly not. I use nothing but my own magnetic. powers. Many years ago I investigated all methods of electro-therapy, but found them at best mere palliatives—they lacked healing force. The human body itself is a most perfect dynamo, and resort to mechanical airs is neither necessary nor of value.” “But how can this vital force cure such illnesses as heart disease, paralysis, appendicitis, and the like ?” aked the interviewer.
“Well,” said Mr Calvi-Freeman, “in the last analysis air diseases are one. They have their origin, however they may manifest themselves in the body, in a lack of vital force; Replenish this, and what physicians call ‘vis medicatrix naturae’ —the healing force of nature —sets about making hajrmony where before was discord.” And—as Mr Calvi-Freeman very strongly emphasised—“harmony is health.”
“How long does the average treatment take ?” was another question. “That depends upon two factors—the patient himself apd the nature of the disease. I have cured cas.es of paralysis, for instance, in two or three treatments—in others it may take quite a time beore the limbs gain their normal activity.” “That means,” said the reporter, “that your patients just have to remain under your treatment until they are cured ?”
“Certainly,” replied the metaphysician ; “but I am unable to give a very close estimate of the time necessary to bring about .the recovery of health. This I explain to' each patient individually, so that he or she can make arrangements for a definite course of treatment, which in most cases is all that is required to restore perfect health.”
“How long will you be staying here ?”
“That depends upon my patients. I -will certainly stay long enough to effect cures that will be memorable. Ultimately, I have arranged to practice my profession in Australia, but it will be several months yet before I leave the Dominion. In the meantime I am here to do all in my power to help those who suffer, and more particularly those to whom ordinary medical treatment has proved of small value.”*
