Prior to the commencement of business at the . Magistrate’s Court this morning Mr E. W. Porritt, on behalf of the local Bar, extended a warm welcome to Mr J. W- Poynton, stipendiary magistrate, who is relieving Mr J. H. Salmon. Mr Porritt said that since occupying the Bench at'Paeroa he would find many new ‘faces, and it was hoped that the same friendly relations between the Bench and the Bar would prevail. Mr Poynton acknowledged the welcome.

An unrehearsed incident happened during the valedictory function to Mr .and Mrs W. H. Blakeway at the Parish Hall last night. The’large gathering was, in the middle of supper when the electric lights failed and could not be restored.- Probably owing to the fact that the night was dark and wet an unusually large number of people carried electric torches, and with the aid of these and some candles the ttmetion was carried through successfully.

Mrs E. 'Whitmore, P.aeroa, has been appointed relieving assistant teacher at the Paeroa District High School as from to-day, vice Miss E. E. Freeman, who is on extended sick leave.

Exceptionally wet weather was experienced locally during the week-end. Torrential rain fell on Saturday morning, but there was a brief cessation during the .atfernoon, followed by a further downpour during the night. There was considerable rain yesterday at frequent intervals. Fortunately the atmosphere has been rather humid, and growing conditions for grass and crops have been very favourable .and farmers have every reason to feel satisfied.

A peculiar accident occurred to a lorry driver, named Frederick Foster, at Whangarei. He was kicking a football about, when the ball struck a pipe he was smoking. The stem of the pipe W‘a,s forced through his mouth, below the tongue, causing a very painfur injury, which neeesitatod his removal to the hospital.

It is evident that the Bishop of Christchurch, the Rt. Rev. Campbell West-Watson, does not use notes when he is delivering his sermon®. If he had wanted to he could not have done so on Sunday night. As he was walking to the, pulpit the cathedra,! was suddenly plunged into darkness. Without a word he entered the pulpit and delivered an eloquent sermon. When he had completed his address and was' walking back up thq chancal the lights returned.

The Christchurch City Council has decided to call a conference; of representatives of chambers of commerce, employers, associations, trades and labour councils., sports bodies, local bodies, etc., td consider a proposal fo arrive a,t a mutual agreement to put into operation in Christchurch the provisions of the. Summer Tiime Bill, recently killed by Parliament.

A reminder is given that am nual general meeting of the Paeroa Lawn Tennis Club is being held at thei Centenary Hall at 7.45 o’clock evening. All members and friends are cordially invited to Attend.
