The queen carnival in connection with the Wai hi Hospital campaign concluded on Tuesday at a social held ini the King’s Theatre. Following was the result: Miss Mary Carter (hockey), £133 4|s, 3d ; Miss Hilda Roberts (rugby), £55 'ss 9d; tota.l, £192 10s, which with the Government subsidy, represents a sum of £385. The "cr<Avning” ceremony was performed by the; Mayor, and both queens were the recipients of pearly necklaces;. An amusing illustration of the. pracice of appointing numerous viice presidents to a club or association in order to obtain extra revenue was. made by Mr A. E. Wish at a meeting of the Uniion Cricket Club (reports, the South- Z land Times). "The Press attacked this habit some time; ago,” he said, Business men, I know, don’t like it. "and I think they were in the right. They wake up in the morning, look at their papers, and find to their consternation, that they have be.en appointed to the Wood-end Two-up Club or Ludo School, or the Makarewa Snakes-and-Ladder Society. They don’t like it.” (Laughter).
