A rumour was circulated round during the week-end by a certain settler to’ the effect that the manager df the Ngatea butter factory had been called .to give evidence before the Commission as to butter-fat returns. It is well known that during the early part of the present season the Patetonga district, being much eii.rlier than the rest dl the Plains, practically kept the butter factory going. The joker who s.tarted the riimbur so prevailed on the executive, of the Ratepayers’ Association that a meeting was called for Monday evening. The executive attended in full force, but the certain settler failed to turn up, his excuse being that a, couple of his cows had* calved. Though the meeting had much to talk over in connection with the inquiry generally, and it was midnight before, the meeting brake up, the originator of the rumour got soundly abused.
