An article in the Lake County Pressby Mr P. de la Perrell, of Winton, recalls the fa,ct that 25 years ago the bed of the Kawarau River was bone dry for about one hour, owing to a huge slip from the mountain side in the vicinity o¥ Gibbston completely blocking the. waterway below where the S'hotover and Arrow rivers join the main stream. A miner named Andrew Reid, walked it,cross the dry riverbed, but did not do any fossicking, as he feared the temporary dani would not hold long.
