PAEROA HIGH SCHOOL.

MONTHLY COMMITTEE MEETING.

ROUTINE BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the Paeroa District High School Committee was, held' on Saturday night, the deputychairman (Mr AV- T. Power) presiding over the follokving: Messrs; J. H. McDonald, R. J. Thorp, C. T. Mettam, W. Purdie, W; Smith, W. H. Blakeway, G. H. Taylor (headmaster), and W. L. Lawrence (secretary). FIRE PREVENTION. A circular was received from the Education Department relative .to the measures to be adopted in fire, prevention work at the school. It was stated by the headmaster that the greatest care to ensure safety was closely followed. It 'was resolved tha.t application be made to the boazrd for the supply of several patent fire extinguishers to be installed in the corridors. INSPECTORS’ REPORT. The inspectors’ report on the primary school for the period August 11 and 12 was received. The report showed that the roll number totalled 394 pupils, and that the standard of efficiency was good and the existing organisation ensured smooth, effective working. A good tone prevailed, a<nd the buildings and playgrounds were in good order. The probationer teachers were, receiving not only a sound training in teaching methods, but also thorough tuition in their studies. Several members expressed their satisfaction, and it.was resolved to record the thanks and appreciation of z the committee to Mr Taylor and his staff. • - p. ' REPAIRS. ' In reply to a letter asking for further wall-boarding and the painting of the new woodwork in the infants’ room, the. board wrote advising that the architect had advised that the painting of certain portions df the building had been omitted because other portions would have to be repainted in the near future. NEW PLAYING AREA.. In connection with the 'WoodNahum Street playing area Mr Smith reported that the sides, of the gully had been ploughed, but much levelling was required. A drain three chains long, 3ft wide on the top and Ift at the bottom, with a half-to-one batter was necessary to cope with the stormwater through the gully. Some discussion ensued as to whether the oats now growing on the area should be immediately ploughed in, and the area siOwn down in grass,, or whether the work should be held over until next autumn. A sub-committee comprising Messrs McDonald, Smith, an<l Blakeway was set up, with .power to act.

Mr Taylor reported that trees, reared in the school nursery, had been planted on three sides of the area,- and were doing well. . . Several members- expressed appreciation of Mr Taylor’s interest and instruction given the pupils in afforestation matters. BOYS’ PLAYGROUND. The visiting committee reported , that during .the month the matter of disposal of storm-water and the pro- ' tection of the clay bank in the boys’ playground had received attention. In order to prevent the bank from fretting and filling up the storm-water drain it was recommended that a quantity of spawls be obtained for the purpose of facing the bank. The matter was referred to Messrs Thorp and Smith, with povyer to act. . 1 Messrs Power and Purdie were appointed a visiting commtitee for the ensuing month. BICYCLE SHED. The headmaster reported that the present bicycle shed was not large enough to house the bicycled of pupils. Further accommodation for at least 20 machines was required. Mr Taylor suggested that the committee might consider the erection of another shed . in the girls’ playground. The matter wsa referred to the visiting committee to bring down a report. FINANCE. Accounts amounting to £32 4s on the school fund account were passed for payment, leaving a credit balance of £2B 8s 9d. The credit balSnce in the new paying area account was shown as £5O 15s lid.
