PLAINS COUNTY.

ENGINEER’S REPORT. The county engineer reported to the Hauraki Plains County Council on Thursday a,s follows : — “General Maintenance.— Patching and resurfacing work has been done in most ridings, and is still in progress. This work will have to cease “in about four weeks’ time, when work will be concentrated on loans.

“Government Grants. — A copy of the Pubjic Works estimates has been received, and apparently all votep, applied for have been granted, with some in addition. Proposals for most of the grants have been submitted and approved. Proposals for thei balance will, be sent in in the cours,ei of a few days. All claims for expenditure on main highways up to the end of last month have been sent in and have since been audited by the Public Works 'Department’s inspector. Payments may be expected shortly.” The chairman said that the Works Committee should go into the matter shortly.

“Hikutaia Quarry.—l arranged with Mr E. T. Donovan, of Thames, for the erection pf the men’s whare, at £l2O. This is now practically completed. Alterations to the manager’s whare are in hand. The output of the crushes for the month ended August 31 was 936 yards, although all this amount was not delivered at Netherton by that date. So far the production costs arte not exceeding the estimate. “Bitumen.—The cold mix Laycold ordered has arrived, a,nd will be tried as soon as possible. “Motor Traffic.—l have measured seven speed traps' in various parts of the county ready for the inspector to make l tests. .

“Ranger.-r-Mr W. Elvin has consented to act as ranger on the terms offered. A formal appointment will be necessary.

Doan.—The sand course has been laid from the end of the bitumen road to Wharepoa Road. The first course of metal will now be laid, rolled, and blinded.” INSPECTOR’S REPORT.

The county inspector, Mr R. H. Cameron, reported that during the month seven building permits, one taxi license, one heavy traffic license, anctoone goodscart license had bee.n isshfd, and ten drivers’ licenses granted. Eight horses had been impounded and £lO 10s collected for dog ta.xes.
