MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. ROUTINE BUSINESS. The H'auraki Plains County- Council met at Ngatea on Thursday, Cr. E. L. Walton presiding oven the following: Crs. H. H. Hicks, A. H. Fisher, W. Madgwick, J. C. Miller, J. A. Reid, the clerk (Mr E. A. and the engineer (Mr F. Basham). Cr. Harris was granted leave of absence. RATES. The special resolutions levying and striking the following rates for the. current year were carried : — General rates: Turua Riding, 2d ; Turua town district, Kopuarahi. 2»4d ; Hora,hia, 2%d ; Nethei'ton, 2d ; Patetonga, 2%d; Kerepeehi, 2%'1; Ngatea, 2%d; Pipiroa, 2%d; Waitakaruru, 2%d. Special Rates: Orchard bridge, l-sd; Waihou bridge. l-16d ; Netherton roads., l%d ; KOpu fehry approach roads, %d; Puriri ferry approach roads, %d ; Waitakaruru roads, %d ; Turua-Netherton roads, 4%d; machinery No. 1 5-16 d, No. 23-16 d ; Horahia roads, Id; Turua town roads, 5d ; Ngataipua East Road, %d; TuruaOrongo roads, 4%d; Kopu bridge, l-5d ; Maukoro bridge, 1-4 Od ; Hora-hia-Opou drainage, 4-sd; Tahuna roads loan, %d. PEKAPEKA WATER SUPPLY. The 'special orders ins connection with the raising of the Pekape.ka Road water supply loan of £2OOO were adopted. MAUKORO CANAL LOAN. The debenture of £lOOO ‘for the Wai-takariuru-Maukoro road loan having come to ha.nd, it was ordered to be executed. KERBSIDE PUMP. Hj.and A. Dent, Ngatea, applied for permission to instal a kerbside petrol pump in ‘front of their premises--Granted subjected to Engineer’s certificate. TAHUNA ROADS LOAN. The T>iako County Council wrote advising that) it appeared that there wias still £875 to be lifted on account of the Tahuna; roads loan of £lO,OOO. The council was asked to raise this ■money and also to apply for the 10 per cent, additional loan as soon .as possible.—Agreed to. KOPU FERRY. The Thames County Council forwarded a copy of a letter ‘from R. P. Gibbons, Ltd., advising that'the firm had gone carefully into the matter of a ; n extra Sunday trip for thfei KopuOrpngo ferry, as recommended by the Plains County Council, but could not se.e that there was any demand and therefore could not accede to the request. NOXIOUS WEEDS INSPECTOR. The Department of Agriculture advised that the ..matter of appointing Mr R. H. Cameron an inspector under the. Noxious Weeds Act was receiving consideration. RIVER WHARVES. The N.Z. Co-operative Dairy Co. forwarded a copy of a resolution adopted at a meeting of suppliers to the Shelly Beach factory urging that the council take over arid control all wharves on the Piako River. Cr. Miller said that some repairs were necessary, and so the matter had been discussed by the settlers. , The chairman reported that so far no reply had been received from the La,nds Department in reply to the council’s requests that it consider reducing the price, permitting th&’ council to levy dues, or repairing the structures before selling them to the county. . . Cr. Miller said that the alternative was for the Thjamies Harbour Board to take over the control. He did not think the Harboajir Board would think twice, about the "matter. Cr. Madgwiefe asked what the objection was to> the Harbour Board having control 1 - It controlled the Turua wharf, an® .it would be fair to' the whole county! to have all the wharves under the same control. On the motion of Cr. Hicks the cle,rk was instructed to reply to the N.Z. Co-operative Dairy Co. and advise that the reqriest would be considered when the ‘whole question was discussed. Cr. Miller gave motice, of motion to consider the whole, matter at the next meeting. MANGATAR’ATA* BRIDGE. The Public Works; Department’s resident engineer, Paeroa, advised that £250, £ for £, had been granted out of the consolidated Tund for the renewal of the Mangatarata bridge.— Referred to th© Finance Committee, for a report on how. the" county was to find its share. COST OF METAL Mcpajlum Bros, advised that having taken into consideration that 1000 yards of red metal would be required at Kerepeehi the price would be reduced to 12s 6d per yard.—Referred to the Works LAND FOR RAILWAY. The Public Works Department forwarded a . number of plans showing land proposed to be taken for the Paeroa-Pokeno railway along the main' highway in the hills neair the county boundary. WORKS TO BE UNDERTAKEN. It was decided that the; Works Committee hold a meeting on September 23 to discuss a programme of works for the year and matters in connection with the Pekapeka water supply, the tenders for the engineer’s house, etc. ENGINEER’S HOUSE. The engineer was instructed to call tenders for the erection of an engineer’s residence, the tenders to'be, dealt with by the Works Committee. LIGHTS FOR ROLLERS. The engineer was instructed to procure electric parking lights for the county rollers, to replace the kerosene la t mps, which were unsatisfactory in stormy weather. The cost would be £lB and the maintenance practically nil.
ACCOUNTS. Accounts totalling £3200 were passed for payment.
