BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting df the Paeroa, Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) presiding over the following: Crs. G. P. de Castro, E. Edwards, P. E. firepan, F. Ei Flatt, E. A. Porritt, H. J. Hare, J. Pinder, and the town clerk (Mr W. C. Alexander). VOTE OF SYMPATHY. Before proceeding with the business of the meeting the council, on the motion of the Mayor, carried a vote of sympathy with Cr. Silcock in the untimely death of his brother. An expression of sympathy with Cr. Silcock in his protracted illness was. also carried. LAND FOR STREET. The District Engineer of Railways wrote asking if the cpupcil was prepared to take over a piece of railway land between the land leased .to the Paeroa Beautifying Society and the railway boundary. The Mayor expressed a doubt as to whether the council could take over the land as a street, it being only 37ft wide. He suggested that .the council should ask the Government to include the land in that leased to the Beautifying Society, and that the council safeguard the access to the back of the adjoining properties. Crs. Hare and Edwards supported, but Cr. Brenan urged that .the street be, not closed to vehicular traffic as it was a convenient outlet. A motion on the lines of the Mayor’s suggestion was carried. WILLIAM STREET SUB-WAY. The District Engineer of Railways wrote agreeing to supply the> metal and sand to allow for 6 inches in thickness and 20 feet in width in the vicinity of the sub-Way at William Street. RAILWAY SETTLEMENT ROADING. The District Engineer of Railways wrote stating that he had made arrangements for a supply O f metal from the Paeroa quarry, and was also arranging for the sand to be forwarded to Paeroa and dumped at the railway settlement.. SEWERAGE CONNECTION. The District Engineer of Railways wrote asking what financial obligation would rest on the department ff the Borough laid a sewer from the present terminus in Thames Road to the railway settlement boundary in Aorangi Road. ' The Mayor said that the work necessary involved an expenditure of £66o'. Ah undertaking had been given to extend the sewer to the settlement. It was; decided to inform the department accordingly. ROAD TO PUKE. The Northern Steam Ship Co. wrote drawing the council’s attention to the shocking and well-nigh impassable state of the Ngahina wharf approach road. The Mayor stated that unfortunately he had not been able to take up the matter with the Public Works Department, but he hoped to do so on Friday. Cr. Hare reported that the department intended to pump a couple of feet of sand on to the road in the next few days. At the present time the department was opening up the old road inside, the stop-bank and bridging the drain; ] ’ ’ INSPECTOR’S REPORT. ' The inspector, Mr J- Capill, reported that Or. de Castro had instructed him to make an inspection of the fowl-runs and houses in the borough. He had completed Junction Road and George Street and served several, notices, with the result that the nuisances had‘been remedied. Cr. Hare desired it to be understood that the, inspector had not been instructed by him as chairman of the Health Committee. It was decided that the report be received, and that no other action be taken. On the motion of Ci", de Castro it was ajso decided that before further notices were served by the inspector they be submitted to the chairman or a member of the Health Committee. FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported that the revenue during the month amounted to £575 10s 6d and the expenditure to £633 12s sd. The statement of the loan accounts was as follows : Council Chambers £6l 8s Bd, street improvements £779 17s 4d, water improvements ss, domain improvements £lB 10s lid all credit; seweragd £34 16s, house sewferage connections £94 3s lOd, debit. HILL STREET. In reply to Cr. Flatt the Mayor Said that it was intended to have repairs carried out to Hill Street as soon as possible. STREET LIGHTS. On behalf of the committee appointed for the purpose Cr. Flatt recommended that a : street light be placed in Albert Street, that the light in Arney Street be shifted tp'a position near the Domain gate, that another light be placed in Station Road, and that the four lights between the Convent and Thorp Street be removed across the road. It was decided to hold the matter over until the next meeting, when the whole subject would be investigated.
