tfEUOBT OF engineer; PROGRESS DURING AUGUST. The ‘following report for the month of August was submitted by the engineer (Mr E. Shaw) at Thursday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council: — “Authority has been received for work on Trig and Pukekauri roads. This work will be proceeded with at once. “The specifications have cOme to hand approved for expending WaihiWhangamata Road to the Thames County boundary. The proposals were sent forward in December, 1924. The delay has- be.en partly caused through the roa.d not being legalised at the time, but. the same is now in order. .Tenders were called for this work on December 22, 1924, and let to Mr H. Ross-, rbut was tagged subject to authority being received from the de-partment,-and it-is still held up awaiting authority. “There is a balance of £36, £ for £, left for Cadman Road, and . I would recommend that proposals be sent in for the a-mount to be spent in metalling. “The Public Works Statement has come to hand, and I note all. grants asked for have' been placed on the current year’s Included is a ; subsidy for £375, £ for £, for Snakey Bend, Manganiti. “Re extra money required for Maratoto Road, I inspected te locality and find it will take from £450 to £5OO to give proper access to- the mine. There appears on the current year’s estmates £250 for this work, and application for a further £2OO has been applied for. “In company with the chairman, a visit was made to the Hauraki Plains County Council; at Ng,atea with reference to the Netherton ferry, and also in comppany with the chairman and Cr. Ma.ce, the officials- bf the Piako County Council, were, met at Mangaiti in connection with the election of the new bridge over the Waihou River at Mangaiti by the Public Works De-, partnient.
“In company with the Paeroa riding members, Crs. Hubbard and Johnstone,’ an inspection off the site for road access asked for by Mr W. Buchanan, was made, but nothing definite was arrived at, and the same was. deferred for further information.
“During the month the steam roller; was removed to the Thames Road, but owing to the. unsuiitable weather, and .the driver being laid up, no work was done. Before proceeding with this work, it will be necessary to know whether the estimated expenditure of £1175 for the road is forthcoming.
“Authority came to hand dated Augu&t 27, 1926, for £2OO, £ for £, for the Paeroa-Kopu ! main highway, and out of this, amount a claim has gone forward for £lO4 for the months of April, May, and June. “A circular letter .will come before you to-day dealing with the; expenditure tit Government Grants.
“I would ask the council’s permission to have 50 yards of metal for Hamilton-Paeroa road, 2’5 yards for between Te Aroha, Borough Boundary and Fitzgerald’s Crossing, and 25 yards for the Waitoki Bank.”
