PAINFUL ACCIDENT.

MAN STRUCK BY WINCH HANDLE.

HEAD INJURIES SUSTAINED.

While in the course of alterations to the people’s sta,nd on the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s property at Thames Road, Paeroa, yesterday morning, a painful accident befell Mr W. H. Taylor, senr.

The work of removing the grandstand bodily to a new position was proceeding at the time the. accident occurred. The structure, having been mounted on rollers, was being moved with the assistance of a stout steel rope attached to a winch. It appears that Mr Taylor was asisting to turn the handle of the winch, and there was a good strain on the rope when one of the stop-pawls apparently failed to engage in the ratchet. As a result the handle Of the winch flew out of Mr Taylor’s hands and whizzed round -at a terrific pace, striking him on the face and knocking him down. Dr. Little was quickly in attendance, and found that Mr Taylor had sustained a broken nose, facial injuries, a,nd scalp wounds. He was carried on a stretcher to the railway station for conveyance to the Thames Hospital. ■ On inquiires being made this morning it was. learned that. Mr Taylor was progressing as satisfactorily as could be expected. An operation was performed last night, when it wa.s. found that the skull was not extensively injured, but the upper jaw, which had been badly fractured, had to be wirted.
