A working profit of £41,001 is shown by the Railway Department’s accounts for the four weeks ended July 24. The receipts- comprised £292,796 from the North Island railways, £195,761 from the South Island, and £41,420 from miscellaneous, service^ — a totaj of £529,978. The: corresponding expenditure was £256,266, £208,30'2, and £24,390—a total of £488,977. The North Island railways thus earned a working profit of £36,‘530, but there was a loss on the South Island system of £12,559. The net revenue from miscellaneous services was £17,030.
