YOUNG LIVES SAVED.

ADVANCE OF MEDICAL SKILL. THINGS CHILDREN SWALLOW. A telegram from Gisborne giving details. of the death of a girl three years and a half old as a result of a sma.ll boiie stud lodging in her larynx has brought to light several cas,es in Christchurch In which, by the use of the latest methods and instruments, foreign bodies- have been removed, thus preventing fatalities .similar to the one reported from Gisborne. One case, which is almost on all fours with the Gisborne was the removal from the larynx of a child eighteen months old of a bachelor s button. This article is probably s mewhat larger than the ordinary stud used at the back of the collar bahd. For nearly three' weeks this button had been in the child’s larynx, and quite, by accident the radiologist at"the Christchurch Hospital discovered that there wa,s. a foreign body in the larynx. Before this discovery it was thought that the, child was suffering from diphtheria. On the day the discovery was made the double-headed button was successfully removed by the Chevaiier Jackson instruments. On different occasions, during the past year or two similar case.s have been successfully dealt with, including the removal of a,, piece of tooth which had reached a patient’s lung, the removal of a mouth whistle of the kind used by .children, and also the i emcval bf pieces of tin and of staples.
