SERIOUS PLAINS MENACE.
FESCUE AND RAGWORT.
The , Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. 6. Hawken, has written to the Hauraki Plains County Council acknowledging receitp of the. council s (representations in the matter of having ta,U fescue declared a noxious weed in the county. The Minister stated that the question was inquired into very thoroughly when the ''matter was raised, some time ago, and it was then decided to take no. action in the matter. In view df the iveness of the inquiry made at that time no reason could beseen for reversing the decision then arrived at. Cr? Harris. said that if something was not done the settlers of the Pla.ins might as well prepare to go off.'
Cr. Madgwick said that the position was, hardly as bad as that. Cr. Miller sajd that county workmen should be instructed to destroy the grass where it appeared on the roadsides in the ridings where it had hot be'come serious.
Other- councillors supported this, and hinted that unless the. seriousness, of the menace was recognised the fescue would have charge of the Plains in ten years. RAGWORT.
Cr. Miller said his attention had been dra,wn to the amount elf ragwort in the district. He moved that the department be asked to appoint Mr R. H. Cameron a noxious weeds inspector.
