FOWL RUNS IN BOROUGH

ALLEGED NUISANCE CREATED.

ATTITUDE OF COUNCIL.

Mrs Collier and Messrs W. C. Strong, 8.. Neil, H. Hawkins, and R-. Hodson, having received notices Wrom the Health Inspector to remove their fowl-runs, petitioned the council, to fui’ther consider its decision, and the matter came up for discussion at the Borough Council meeting last evening.

Cr. Brenan said that he failed to see how a nuisance was created in that locality. Cr. Flatt said it appeared that the council ■ was discussing something of which it had no definite knowledge. The Mayor said that i'f the health inspector 'reported that a nuisance existed it w'ais the duty of the ccjuncil to support his, efforts.

Cr. Flatt said that the council was entitled to know on what grounds; objection was taken to the t'owl-runs. A copy elf the, inspector’s notice should be handed to the town clerk for the information of the council'.

Cr. de Castro thought that before any notices- were issued by the inspector a member oIT the health committee should* look into the. cause of the report. Ratepayers should not be annoyed if a complaint Was not warranted. The Mayor said that the health inspector should be a judge Ofl what constituted a nuisance. It shquld not be necessary for a councillor to usurp the functions of the inspector. The following resolution was moved by the Mayor: "That the writer's of the letter be infermexl that the council was asking for a report from the borough inspector, and that i’f the slightest nuisance existed the council had no option but to insist on the strict enforcement of by-laws, and that the inspector be instructed to lodge copies of ail notices issued with the town clerk.” Seconded by Cr. Hare and carried.
