MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING.

ROUTINE BUSINESS.

The monthly meeting.of the Paeroa Borough Council, was held last night. His Worship the Mayor (Mr Wi. Marshall) presiding over the following: Ci'S. E. Edwards, E. A. Pqrritt, H. J. Hare, G. P. de Castro, P, E. Brenan, F. E. Flatt, 'and the town clerk (Mr W. C. Alexander}.

LOAN MONEY. The Superintendent, State Advances Office, advised that domain improvements loan validating legislation would be ne.cess.ary, and suggested that the council submit a draft clause to the Department of Internal Affairs. \ Mr. A. M. Samuel, M.P., wrote acknowledging the council’s communication with reference tq the sale of debentures at a discount. He stated that the Minister was. of opinion that there should be no difficulty in having the matter put thiough. The Mayor intimated that the draft clause had been put in hand, and it was hoped tha.t the matter would be brought to a satisfactory conclusion. CRITERION BRIDGE, PAEROA.

The Assistant Under-Secretary . of of Public Works wrote acknowledging receipt of the agreement duly executed by the council in connection with the Criterion bridge. He 1 advised that if the council had any trouble with regard to the amount which could be raised in respect ot this work with- s

out taking a poll, the question of issuing a. further warrant in terms of section 9 of the Public Works Amendment Act, 1913, could be considered later. x

ROADING RAILWAY SETTLEMENT. The district engineer of railways wrote asking the council to confirm the proposals regarding, the roading of the settlement which had been verbally made by the Mayor, i.e., that the council was willing to undertake the formation and rolling of the. metal if the, department would provide it and ha.ve it carted to the ground and spread. The portions of the roads to be treated were Ainslie Road 'from Aorangi Road to Raroa Road, and Aorangi Road from its junction with Ainslie Road to the last railway house on the road. A further letter from the engineer - stated tha.t the proposals had been referred to Wellington, and he would advise immediately if they were accepted. Arrangements for the delivery df the metal ap’d sand, as required, could then be made. The Mayor said that confirmation from Wellington was being awaited. NOISY MOTOR HORNS.

The Inspector of .Police. Hamilton, wrote in reply to the complaint with reference to annoyance caused by unnecessary tooting of motor horns, and advised that in the absence of any provisions in the by-laws of the council dea.ling specifically with the matter it was a difficult position to handfe. Section 3, subsection 10, of the Police Offences Act would possibly reach it, but it would have to be established that the act was, wanton and malicious, and proof would have to be given that an inhabitant was disturbed by it. The local pefo’ce would do anything possible to assist the council, and would co-operate with the borough inspector to that' end.

It was. resolved to keep the remarks of the police inspector in view, in cas.e the nuisance was. not abated, and assistance was required at any future time. NGAHINA WHARF. The local agent of the Northern Steam Ship Co. wrote stating that the approach to this, wharf was badly in need of repairs, and that about 15 - yards of metal would be necessary to put the toad in order. The Mayor, in answer to Or. Flatt, sa,id that repairs were required to the piece of? low-lying road put through by the Public Wonks Depart- >

Cr. Brenan drew attention to the bad state of the stop-bank road at the Puke. Cr. Edwards said he understood * that the department had the matter in hand. OFFER OF SERVICES.

Mr K. L. Slyfield, Paeroa, wrote: "As. one keenly interested in the advancement of our town and realising that the materialisation off your objectives, the public swimming baths and town beautifying project, aS schemes, likely to improve Paeroa, ! wish to offer my services wholeheartedly in any capacity as you may think fit to entrust.” The Mayor said that the letter had been addressed to him personally, and he thought the spirit of the letter was to be highly commended. Cr. H. J. Hare agreed. He said that the writer had always taken a keen interest in local affairs, and his spirit aiid enthusiasm were to be ad'mired and encouraged. It was resolved to thank the writer 'for the letter, and that the council would be pleased to a.vail itself of the services when required.
