MATCH PLAYED AT RAETIHI. On Saturday a representatvie fixture Thames Valley v. King Country was played on the Raetihi Showground under conditions that were adverse to good football. After sev- . eral days of heavy rain .the ground was well soaked. The morning was showery, but the rain, ceased -just before the commencement of the match and it continued fine throughout the game. The game was a -hard-fought one, and was; very evenly contested. Considering the state of the playipg ground fast play Was maintained throughout, and the ball was. exceptimally well handled by the backs, although the game w'as practically a forward one. The gate was affected by the inclemency of! the weather, but the match was well attended cohr sidering the circumstances, there being about 490 present. The following players were promi- •. nent .throughout:—Thames Valley: Goldsbury (2), Stoupe, Yo|ung, Patters,bn. King Country: Edwards, Foster, Hobson, Parrant, Lee. The following comprised the teams: Thames Vajley.—Costello, S. Goldsbury, McLeay, Tdwers, Stoupe, Gilpin, - Masters, F. Goldsbury, Patterson, Young, Peacocke, Keoh.au, -Taylor, .McPheison, Robinson. McLeay captained .the Thames Valley team and Hobson the King Country team. In a private letter 'from the .manager (Mr J. W. Silcock) to the secretary of the. Thames Valley Rugby Union (Mr J. M. Crcjsby) mention is made of steveral individual players. ’’ He says:. “All the local boys played well. Taylor missed an easy kick, but got one .over. Costello made two ■good attempts; at goal, just missing oh both occasions. He-is a fine fullback, and played ' a stunning game. We are looking forward to getting in -two days’ good training on“a.rrival, at 'Taranaki. Malt did not play yester- . day (last Saturday), but he is available against Taranaki, and will the team. He will take Gilpin’s place at flvei-eighths, ’ and I £ understand Gilpin is .replacing Mas--ers at half. Several members of the -team have slight colds, but nothing
serious, except Crimminsi, who ha r s a slight attack df “flu.” I have ordered him to bed, and will keep him there until, he is right. He is being well looked after, and appeared much better this, morning (Sunday). If he is not too well to-morrow I will n'bit let him go on to Wanganui until a day or two Inter.”
