UNDUE VIOLENCE.
DISPLAY WITH POLICE BATON.
NOT TOLERATED IN THE FORCE.
The Commissioner of Police (Mr, W. B. Mcllveney) stated ?t Wejllington on Saturday that, the constable who recently struck a civilian in Wellington with a baton and cut his s,calp open had privately compensated the civilian. “The regulations are very strict against policemen unnecessary violence,” said the Commissioner, “and I intend to see that they are enforced. The constable in question has been suspended, and next week an inquiry will be held into the whole occurrence. The charge which will be brought against the constable will be one of using undue violence. It does not matter the least whether he was justified in striking the blow or not; no member of the police force isi allowed to use unnecessary violence. I am known as a strict disciplinarian, and I intend o see that the regulations are obeyed.”
