BENEFIT MATCH ON PLAINS.
NGATEA V. TURUA.
A benefit match in aid of L. Cotter, ,a Ngatea player who suffered a broken leg while taking part in a match early in the season, was. played at Ngatea on Saturday between Ngatea ami Turua. The game was fast and open, forwards and backs combining well. Berney, Moleswoi ch, Stretton, Hayward, a,nd Smart were included in the Ngatea fifteen and D. Dalgety in the Turna team. Turua made the pace from the kickoff and threw the ball abqut in good style, both forwards and backs handling well, but good tackling by Ngate.a negatived the movements. Turua persisted, and as, a result off a forwa) d rush Hutchinson, scored. McCoid failed to convert, Turua 3, Ngatea 0. Ngatea atacked, and .after some good passing Stretton equalled the scores. Mol esw or th Jailed with the kick. Each sides attacked in turn, a forward pass, dr a knock-eta spoiling - when a s.core staeme.d likely. From a scrum in Ngatea’s twenty-five the ball went to Birkenhead, to pass out to Molesworth, Stretton, Hayward, and to Birkenhead again, Williams in his turn failing to handle, the ball going out in Turua’s territory. 'A penalty relieved, and the forwards by following up smartly, carried, on 'for Booth to Score. Elvin failed to convert. Turua 6,. Ngatea 3. The home forwards put on the pressure., .and from a tussle in front of the posts Smart secured and transferred to Molesworth, who scored well out. Gill ma,de a good attempt with the kick but the ball we.nt under the bar. Turua 6, Ngatea 6.
Commencing the second half Turua set up an attack and Hutchinson dribbled through and almost scored, but Wilton kicked over t)ie. dead-ball line and saved. Play went to the other end. McCtoid’s relieving kick went to Wilton, who returned high, and supported by Clea.ve and Gill an attack was set up for Gill to score. The kick failed. Ngatea 9, Turua 6. Smart returned the kick-out to McCoid, who misfielded and' gave Cleave a chance to snap up the leather, but he was tackled on the line. From tight play the ball shot out to Cleave, who crossed -the line before his opponents knew where the ba,ll was. Gill converted. Ngatea 14, Turua 6, Turua livened- up, and a rus.h headed by Clarke and Hutchinson reached Ngatea’s twenty-five, where Wilton was caught in possession. Hutchinson seized the opportunity and scored. . The gate takings amounted, to £lO 15 s. During the evening at the Tennis dance the football secretary accepted spare change and small coins, which .brought the total to £l2 3s.
