TRAIN RUNS INTO JIGGER.
ROTORUA, July 22
A train which left Rotorua yester-' day aftern'oon ran into a jigger in the neighbourhood, of Arahiwi.
There were two men on the jigger, Donald' Thomas (a:ganger residing at Arahiwi) and William, Arthur George Taylor (siurfaceman), also of Arahiwi. They were returning holme firom the Putaruru section of the line.-
Thomas died before medical aid could be obtained 'from Putaruru. Taylor was, uninjured. From information gathered it appears that a contributing cause was the late running of the express due in Rotorua at 5.20 p.m. Down and up trains usually pass at Arahiwi, and the men on the jigger, expecting this, would not trouble about the down train, but concentrate on watching for the express following.
Unfortunately, owing to the late running of the express, the down* train was sent on from Arahiwi to pas the express at Putaruru.
The line has a fairly heavy grade. With sharp bends, and the train came upon the jigger without warning to the riders.
An inquest is being held at Arahiwi.
