LOCALITY SIGNS.

INFORMATION FOB MOTORISTS.

ROUTE FROM PAEROA TO THAMES

The question of the; route to be followed by motorists from the Paeroa borough to Thames' was discussed by the Paeroa Borough Council on Thursday evening wh®n a letter was read from the service officer of the Auckland . Automobile Association pointing out that soine time ago he had arranged for a number of signs to be erected in the borough, but on a recent visit to Paeroa he" had (noticed a sign indicating Thames Road a hundred yards or s.o dblwn the main street from the Waihi-Te Aroha junction -had not been erected. The writer said he concluded that the' object was to divert traffic .through the main street. If this was so it was not likely that a motorist would sto'p to purchase anything if he had n °l ; already intended to stop. A similar policy had been adopted by a large number of local bodies some’, years ago, but conditions,- had now changed, and those towns which were providing the greatest facility for motorists, and the erection df direction signs certainly ca.ni® under that heading and were' reaping the greatest benefit. With the progress Paeroa was likely to make as a junction, and with the improved accommodation that would now be available, the council should wish to be up-to-date in every respect. It wa,s resolved that the, sign be erected at the Ariiey Street-Nbrmanby Road corner at the expense of the association. Cr. E. Edwards recorded his vote against the erection of a sign at this corner, and said that he thought it was desirable. that visitors- should proceed through the town whenever the opportunity offered. The provision of a second sign would largely defeat that object. The Mayor said that it was six of one and half a dozen of the other. Motorists from Auckland via the Puke would turn off at the Station Road corner without coming through the town, while those trom "Waihi and Te Aroha directions would also miss the town by turning into "Arney Street.
